5 Quick Tips for Machine Maintenance in the Woodshop by Made by Wolfe

Machine maintenance is important to ensure it lasts longer. It is easier to maintain a machine in good condition than it is to buy another one.

Quick Tip #1 Don’t Forget About It

Do not forget about doing machine maintenance. We know that life in the workshop is busy. But if we don’t make time for machine maintenance, the machine will remind us. Usually at the most inappropriate time.

Quick Tip #2 Know Your Tools: Which Needs What

You should take note of which machine in your workshop needs what kind of maintenance. You need to know which moving parts need to be cleaned. Which are those need lubricant or oil from time to time, filters that need to be changed, drive belts, blades, and so on.

Quick Tip #3 Know Your Tools Current Condition

Some of our woodworkers are hobbyists or night workers, others are full time. Either way it is vital that you know the condition of every machine before using it. Especially if it has not been used for a very long time. Take note if you already need to change the blades. It is also important to have spares for anything that routinely requires replacement so if something happens you still have something to use for.

Quick Tip #4 Schedule the Maintenance

Busy all week long, month, or year? It’s better to make a schedule where you check every single tools or machine to ensure you keep the condition up to snuff. At least twice every 3 months or depending on loads of your machines, even more often. It’s much better to have a reminder from your calendar than from the machines that are not working anymore.

Quick Tip #5 DON’T FORGET ABOUT IT.

Just do it. Set your reminders now, set your schedule, make it happen. A little time investment now will pay off in the long run!
