Kris Reynolds: Reynolds Custom Woodworks

“We wanted a table in one of the hallways upstairs in the house, and we couldn’t find one that would fit. So, I thought, I’ll try to make one. And that was it for me. I was hooked, and it kind of came naturally. I was able to sort out design, I was able to come up with joinery, and I was hooked.

So, it started off kind of as a furniture-making operation. A lot of the items in our house. And, of course, then friends want stuff. And then I got asked to build a kitchen for a friend of mine in 2004, and I was like, I want to build cabinets. And then here we are today; we do about 35 to 40 a year.”

Welcome to a brand-new episode of the Woodpreneur Podcast. Today, your host Steve Larosiliere is joined by Kris Reynolds, owner of Reynolds Custom Woodworks. Kris started by attempting to build a table for his family after they struggled to locate one that would fit in one of their home’s corridors. And it was because of that event that Kris found his calling. He got hooked, designing and building things came naturally to him. Consequently, he finally created a furniture-making operation in their home, and after that, friends started asking him to do something for them, like building kitchens. And fast forward to today; they do 35 to 40 services annually.

In this episode, we’ll find out where Kris gets most of his clients, the difficulties he faces in his current business space, and how he transitioned from being a full-time physics teacher to becoming a full-fledged Woodpreneur.

Additionally, Kris discusses some of his ideas for company expansion, his responsibilities in light of his team’s growth, and how he feels about his company today as opposed to when he first started.

“I taught high school physics for 10 years while I got this business going.

I enjoyed the camaraderie with the kids, but I also liked getting my message across. In physics, I was a really hands-on teacher. We were always taking something apart and putting it back together. It was great. So, my first real hire is the same guy I have now.”

Maintaining a Social Media Presence

There is a non-zero possibility that if you are a company or business, you are using social media in some capacity. However, how many businesses have a vibrant, active social media presence? And how many of them are not so active? Kris struggles to keep up a social media presence. He always wonders, “How do they have time for regular work,” whenever he comes across other businesses with a solid social media presence. However, Kris resisted hiring someone because he felt that his name and the company would be at risk if something went wrong. Let’s face it, posting random links, mentioning a few people, and calling it a day won’t get you very far on social media. You need some order. A social media plan is necessary.

“I am terrible at maintaining a social media presence. And yeah, I mean, I’m 44, so I’m not a dinosaur.

Honestly, when I look at all these guys that I follow on Instagram videos, I’m like, how do you have time for regular work? Yeah. And I don’t necessarily want to hire somebody to do that because it’s my name, so I don’t know if it’s a lack of followers, I don’t know if it’s a lack of me not putting in the time.”
