Do This to Make $2K/Day with a Woodworking Business By Upflip

Story Behind the Angel City Woodshop

Paul Moorhead started Angel City Woodshop in 2016, but he started building furniture in the backyard at the age of 33 and kept doing it until having his own shop.

His warehouse start-up cost is over $100,000. $35,000 for the electrical cost, 2 months rental deposit for $20,000, and almost $200,000 for machinery. The start-up cost of 100 grand is from an investor.

“And I knew it’d be tough, but there’s, you know, for anyone else out there who’s thinking about doing something like this, there were a lot of expenses that just creep up so you just always need to calculate your cost, and triple it. ” – Paul Moorhead

Factors to consider for success

  • Start Small and Keep your expenses as low as possible.

You have to have a margin in your life and in your own time to be creative, to learn, and not always just be under pressure to pay your bills. Don’t hire anyone until you have to. Be in a space where you have the essential tools, master them, and only buy new things when you absolutely need them. Don’t throw five grand at something you’re gonna use for only twice a month.

  • Work Very Hard and Learn the Craft.

You need to be proficient and confident in the quality and the techniques you employ. Actually, the passion to make people happy, bringing beauty to their home, the combination of working hard and passion is really incredible.

  • Understand how to utilize your team

There are so many things at least 1,000 things you need to master when it comes to woodworking with this you need to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the team you have, whether are working efficiently, are all working together, and are motivated. And lastly, are you getting the results you are looking for?

Low Points as a Business Owner

When starting up a business, woodworkers tend to gather as many projects as possible to create a profile of their own, without knowing that it will just be beneficial for the client but not for the owner except for making your own profile. So even if you gather as much as the project you want, do not forget to make sure you will gain a profit from it. And do not be sad and devastated when turning down a client. It’s part of the process.

As you go along the way, you can able to buy more and more tools that you use when working. Being in the backyard for a while is good but this is not a great and not long-term setup. Getting started is always the biggest hurdle, but if you are good with your finances, you’ll going to be successful in bringing in revenue.

Custom furniture business you have a high season and a low season. It’s kind of month-by-month and project-by-project. It’s not always gonna be consistent. But you should be keeping track of and know what your seasons are.

Business Marketing

Customers will find you through referrals, social media or google. You need to have enough presence on those platforms so you will have room to grow your business. You need to always document your work for social media purposes and for your portfolio.

Instagram can be your online business card and an online portfolio. It keeps people engaged and seeing what we’re doing and what we’re doing next. And for the website, it is your online business card where you want people to end up

Your website needs to be beautiful. People are gonna get an immediate impression of you from your website. So, keep it simple, keep it clean. But ideally, it’s beautiful and it’s easy to use
