How to Weather Slow Months As A New Business Ft. Coach’s Custom Woodworking

How to get your name out there?

For Cagen Chaney of Coach’s Custom Woodworking, being 110% himself hit it off. He was very natural, genuine, and hilarious in his reels.

“Cagan is just a fun person to watch on social because he is 110% himself.”

“Like you start pushing reels. Reels are getting pushed on social media. And I was like, sweet, I can make a reel. So, I make a couple of reels and then 6 or 7 reels later, one or two blow up and then like Facebook’s like, ‘Hey, do you want money for these?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I want money’ So that’s how that rolled and then I was monetized.”

The main challenge Cagan had was how to do the business and how to get his name out there.

“Just the branding part of how do I brand myself and set myself up for success without running myself into the ground”

Find Your Niche

There are so many woodworkers out there. How do you make yourself stand out? You find your niche. Find that very specific activity or product that sets you apart and in which you can find success or fulfillment. In Cagen’s case, it was his custom woodwork on high end tables. It was something that he enjoyed and was very good at.

Be Active on Social Media

“We’ve been growing a lot. We’re starting to grow on Instagram. We’re starting to hear more on Instagram, and Facebook. We’ve grown quite a bit on Facebook just within the past couple of months. Really. We grew a lot on Facebook after my wife started doing all the reels because she started posting a lot.”

Join a Network

Being part of a network where you can share and collaborate with like minded individuals and also having a mentor can get you far in the business.

Cagen was very thankful for joining Steve’s mentorship program. “Dude, I appreciate it. And man, a lot has been because of you just being able to help. You being able to answer questions, and the most important thing – leading us down the right path where we need to be able to succeed. That’s been the best thing.”

Have a Marketing Plan

Not having a marketing plan for your business is like building a house without a blueprint. Steve’s advice for Cagen was to redesign his logo, focus on tables, create a portfolio and pump out more content on social media. He also had to increase his prices to send a message that he is making quality stuff.

He reached out to interior designers and managed to get some business out of those connections.

“Make a list of interior designers, make a list of contractors, make a list of realtors, make a list like anybody that could be a referring partner to you. I would contact luxury realtors, people that get a few $100,000 commissions. Think of things that you can control so you can control how many leads you get per day, right? How many touches that content that you put out? Now that you know what you know, finish up that portfolio.

Just focus on the things that build your business: outreach on leads, creating content, performing referring partnerships. Putting your name out there. Make sure that when people think of your part of the world, they think of you and tables.”
