Sam Finco: Big Iron Tree Works

Today, we’re talking with Sam Finco from Thrive Tree Care. Getting started recently, most of Sam’s business is preservation and contract work based. He started off as a rock climber and was in school for forestry education, but once Sam saw an arborist in action, he knew it was the perfect career for him.

So far, Sam has had great success with every client he’s worked with. He’s continuously asked back and brought on for long-term maintenance contracts. Of course, there have been bumps in the road with no-show employees and competitors who are less knowledgeable and offer lower rates. At the end of the day, though, Sam knows that tree service is a luxury service and clients get what they pay for. There’s a marked difference in his quality of work and that’s what brings these clients to him.

Of course, Sam also loves getting “paid to play”. The rigging and climbing aspect of tree work is his favorite part.

The Certification Process
Getting certified as an arborist was a bit time consuming, but not incredibly difficult. In lieu of school, Sam spent 3 years in the field, studied for a year, and then was able to take the test. While he doesn’t think the test is the best gauge on someone’s skill or talent, it’s a step in the right direction.

Instagram and Marketing
Thrive’s IG account links to its website and enables Sam to show potential clients exactly what it is he does. It also enables him to showcase his skills in a visual way that attracts customers.

Show Highlights:

  • Thrive’s motto? “Helping people and their trees THRIVE in Madison.”
  • Tree Service is a “luxury expense”. Unless a tree has fallen on your house, it’s not a necessity.
  • Learning the industry from his mentors helped give him the knowledge to go in the direction he wanted to in his business.
  • Sam wants his business to focus on the preservation side of tree service, build a great team, hone in on this one thing, and be the best there is at it.
