The Power of Delegation Ft. Dancing Grains Woodworks

The Power of Delegation Ft. Dancing Grains

“If there’s one challenge that has been present longer than any, it’s probably hiring my job away and delegating work. I’ve put a ton of effort into getting that out of the way and not being involved in every single tedious aspect of the business.”

Steve has grown many businesses and companies over the years, both for himself and others. In that time, he has learned many things, but one of the most important things is that delegation is a muscle that needs to be continuously developed.

“The first thing is determining the things that only you can do. Then take down the things you can do that you don’t want to spend time on and the things you don’t want to do at all. After that, you need to compile all that information together and prioritize those things among you and your staff so that everyone is focused on the tasks that make sense for them. Truly commit to the process of delegating, and you’ll see results so quickly.”

Avoiding Emotional Energy Drain

“I have somebody on my team at Acres of Timber, my accounts manager. This is going to be our fifth anniversary. I talked to her this morning, and I said, ‘Hey, I don’t know if you know this, but I’d rather talk on the phone than write an email. That’s just me.’ She goes, ‘Oh, I know that.’ I said, ‘But do you know why? Sometimes it’s really hard for me to put what’s in my head down on paper; it’s just hard for me to do it.’

We have conditioned ourselves in our business to do many things that are hard to do, but you know how to do them. Those are the things that you should get off your plate because they take your emotional energy away from everything else.”

From his own personal experience, Steve knows that specific tasks need to be handled, so they don’t drain your energy. It can be worthwhile to have somebody check your emails or texts and flag things that need your direct attention if checking correspondence is something that drains you.

For woodworkers, administrative tasks are often the things that need to be delegated the most, but this practice can also extend to the shop. Training a younger person interested in the trades about sanding can be an excellent way to delegate a rudimentary task that is time-consuming but extremely necessary for completed projects. Take a close look at your business and needs, and figure out what you can delegate to enhance your company in the long run.
