There’s No Such Thing as Too Much Visibility ft. City Hardwoods

“Is there anything that you’re struggling with, or something that you need to think through? It not only helps you, but the guests and other people that listen, they can take action which is really cool. So tell me, what can I help you with?”

For many Woodpreneurs, making things is the simple part of the job. It’s not always easy, but it’s the reason that most people get into the industry. However, especially nowadays, social media is one of the cornerstones of any successful business, and John Graves from City Hardwoods knows that sometimes it helps to get a bit of advice when it comes to that essential element.

“I was thinking about this today, actually. How much is too much with social media, like just being in their face? What is your opinion on that? Is every day too much? I enjoy doing social media but at the same time, it does take time and I don’t want to overdo it.”

Reminding People that you Exist

“That’s a great question. So the way I look at it is like, look in your email right now. There’s a good chance that whoever you bought from recently sent you an email, right? If you buy something from The Gap, or Home Depot, they’re sending a message tomorrow, and because they have your email, you’re going to get ads from them.

We think because it’s our business, that we’re important, but you’re not any more important than the other things are to others. And so, if you have a product or service, it’s kind of on you to remind people that you exist, otherwise people will forget about you altogether.

If you’re feeling like it’s too much, you actually have to push past that because that’s the part where you’re starting to feel uncomfortable, but people don’t even still don’t even know you exist.”

For business owners, our companies are a massive part of our lives, and they are on our minds constantly. So while it is easy to worry about ‘overdoing it’ with social media, you have to remember that you are just one entity vying for attention from all of your potential customers. A big part of improving that aspect of your business is mindset, but you can look at your metrics and make actionable changes.

Getting Really Good at Reels

“I’m gonna I’m on your Instagram right now. So let’s look at a recent table post from you. You got 54 likes on it and you’ve got 3900 followers, so your percentage is low. Not a lot of people are seeing your content at all. So you actually have to keep posting more.

One thing that you should really do is create more stories and more reels. If you’re going to get creative on anything, it should be on videos and reels, because reels are huge right now. Instagram is trying to compete with TikTok.”

Every social media platform wants their users to stay on their platform as much as possible. Since TikTok has grown so explosively over the last few years, it has pushed Instagram to create a similarly stylized system, which means users will stay on the platform more, which earns Instagram more ad revenue.

When creating Instagram reels and stories, it comes down to educating, entertaining, and inspiring people. Consider those three elements as the pillars of your content creation process. Not every post needs to be all three, but every post should come down to at least one or two.

Creating an Endless Supply of Content

“It’s never enough. It’s literally never enough. I would recommend that you do more stories than posts. Then you can reserve your posts for something else. What you could do for your feed is to take pictures of your customers coming in and buy stuff because you’ll always have an endless supply of content.

Post your pictures of your customers holding up what they just bought, and then tag them. Then repost it to your Facebook, and then tag them on Facebook too. Make sure that everybody who comes in, you get their Instagram, you get their Facebook, and say, “Hey, I’m gonna take your picture for Facebook” and caption it ‘so-and-so’ just bought this.

Now people start to see that there’s like a little bit of social proof here. “Oh, there’s people just like me.” You make that part of your mix. Use your stories for the projects that you’re working on, and utilize Instagram highlights to say, “Lumber in stock. Wood stock.” I’m sure you hav reviews and testimonials, you can put those there too.

It all starts with the mindset man. It’s never enough. Never. Nobody knows, and nobody cares about you. You just have to make them remember that you’re there!”
