Yelitza Mora: BuildTX Solutions

Yelitza Mora: BuildTX Solutions

Welcome back to a brand new episode of the Woodpreneur Podcast. Today your host Steve Larosiliere sits down with Yelitza Mora from BuildTX Solutions. Steve and Yelita met at a mastermind in San Diego, where Yelitza explained that she operates a construction company.

She may not be your typical Woodpreneur, but wood is one of the many mediums that Yelitza works with. Additionally, the brand and lifestyle she has built around herself paint her as a stellar example of what Woodpreneurs can be capable of.

“We started about five years ago here in Dallas, Texas, because there was a need. I was consulting before we started the company, and then I wanted to start investing in real estate. When we tried to find good and reliable contractors, we couldn’t find any; it was just like the horror stories.

Everyone has this idea that contractors are terrible, they’re going to go ahead and run off with your money, and they’re not going to do things the right way. So I told my business partner, a civil engineer, I was like, ‘Hey, you have a lot of experience in the construction part of things in Venezuela, where we’re from, on the commercial side. Why don’t we collaborate?

I’m good at sales, consulting, looking at problems, and creating solutions. And you’re good at doing, boots on the ground, running the crews, making sure everything is supposed to go how it is supposed to go. Then we see if we’re a good fit for the community and the marketplace.’” That’s how we launched the business in 2017, and since then, it’s been rapid growth for us.”

Breaking From the Mold

As Yelitza explained, there is a stigma around general contractors and one from which she and her new company had to break free. The early years for her and BuildTX Solutions were challenging, but they could innovate and make the changes needed to succeed in the industry.

“The first couple of years were tough. You have to learn what the customer criteria are, what they’re expecting, and how to innovate because we come from an industry that is very set in its ways. It’s like, this is set, this is what you get, this is what I offer, and whatever you want, it’s not going to happen.

So we came with a very refreshing sense that we will help you, you are my customer, I will build your home, and I will guide you through the process. But at the end of the day, it’s your home, and we want to ensure that whatever your product is, it’s what you want. In the beginning, breaking that standard of ‘Hey, I’m not like the rest was challenging. I’m not the general contractor that everyone thinks we are.’

That’s why we started saying that we own a construction company and don’t refer to ourselves as general contractors. There is nothing bad about that. But it’s like saying, I am a used car salesperson, and I don’t want to deal with that. So it was hard at the beginning, but our products are very nice, and we pay great attention to detail. We have a very process-driven company; everyone is super knowledgeable, and we execute well. Our customer service is the most important thing.”

Steve’s Advice Corner

“I admire what you’ve done; your social media presence is very strong. If you have any advice on how to grow it, attract more people, and make it where people want to be in our community and part of our brand.”

Yelitza and BuildTX Solutions are doing an excellent job of developing their brand and online presence. Still, for a business to experience actual growth, there is no such thing as too much attention. Steve has many years of experience solving this problem for businesses, and BuildTX Solutions is no exception.

“In New York City, my friends and I threw the best party in New York City on a Tuesday night. I ran a nonprofit, and I would host galas and fundraisers. So I was always getting people drunk, raising money, and having fun picking the DJs. I was setting the tone. I’ve been doing these Woodpreneur meetups, and it’s just been great to connect with people.

You’re probably feeling like the high off of the world opening up and creating a platform for businesses. But what does a platform mean? A platform means that you either have your own show, your own podcast, your own event series, you host talks, or something similar. If you look at that, keep in mind your ideal target audience.

So if your target audience is about luxury, who else are they buying from? What are the transactions before and after you? What kind of cars are they buying? What kind of beverages are they buying? Figure all of that out, then go and partner with them.”
